What can you do to improve your website load time?
1/ Reduce the number of different servers your page calls as it loads. Each ad banner, hit counter, site tracker and so on that you place on your page means another 2 second delay while the browser looks up and connects with the host server, plus whatever time is needed to collect and download the image or data. One of the major causes of load locking is server overloading or faulty code directly related to these gotta-have widgets.
2/ Get rid of unnecessary graphics. No kidding... delete them. Web sites are not glossy full page magazine articles complete with 8 different poses of Pamela Anderson or Elle MacPherson or whoever. If you must have the photo or graphic, keep it below 20k tops. That means one 20k picture, NOT 17 of them all crammed into one page! If you really have to have those 17 images, link to each one individually through a text description or a thumbprint image.
3/ Now that you have decided on the pictures or graphics you want to keep, optimize them. There are many ways to do this but we recommend you learn to do it with your own graphics editing program for the best results. Alternatively you can find numerous web sites with image optimization utilities you can use for free or a small charge.
4/ Be sure to use WIDTH and HEIGHT tags with every image and table on your page. This alone will vastly improve your overall load time. Another sure fire way to speed things up is to break up big pages into a series of smaller sub pages. Consider using a simple quick loading title page with a list of text links to all your other, slightly slower pages.
